Rhys’ Story

This is Rhys, and while he is only 12 years old, he has been volunteering to help out and look after his elderly neighbours for the last 18 months.

Every morning before school, Rhys goes and delivers a newspaper and checks in on his neighbours Samuel and Margaret before coming back and letting his mum know that the couple are fine.

Their daughter Margaret says: “It has been such a joy for my mum and dad to have this lovely cheery wee boy deliver the paper every day, check if they’re up and about and report back to his mum if he thinks anything is amiss. Being so far away, it is very reassuring for me to know that someone is checking in on them daily.

“It’s a lovely thing to see a young person taking on this kind of responsibility and genuinely caring about elderly neighbours – young Rhys knows how much we appreciate what he is doing for us but it would be lovely to see him get some recognition for his consistent commitment, so when I heard of the Saltire Awards, I thought he was a perfect candidate.”
