As part of our Volunteers’ Week 2022 celebrations, and keeping in line with the theme Year of Stories, we’re featuring a series of positive stories from our wonderful Falkirk volunteers.
A group of St. Mungo’s High School students have begun a volunteer project dubbed Allotmenteens, made up of group members Arden, Brett, Christopher, Hayden, Kyle, Zara, and Zoe. With help from Community Learning & Development (CLD) and The Conservation Volunteers (TVC), and with permission from Falkirk Council, they started their voluntary environmental project.
The group submitted their hard work as a competition entry to Forth Environment Link’s Green Start Competition, and while they unfortunately didn’t win, their project still went towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, SCQF Level 4 Youth Achievement Award, and Saltire Awards.
Allotmenteens did a wonderful job tending to the Walled Garden Allotment in Callendar Park. They picked up litter and cleared away overgrown plants that were blocking pathways. They also hung birdboxes created from pallets at Denny and Bonnybridge Men’s Shed, cleaned up the garden’s cast iron gates in preparation for painting, and replanted wild strawberries that had begun growing over pathways. The team plan to continue growing fruit and vegetables over the summer holidays to use at home too.
Julie from Education Scotland visited the Walled Garden Allotment to see everything the group had achieved, and had this to say:
“It was so powerful to hear from the young people directly about the positive impact that this project has had on their lives, as well as seeing the positive impact that they are having on the environment, climate, and community.”
